Belonging Through Bytes: Reimagining AI Learning from the Ground Up

In Swansea, we see every day what digital exclusion really looks like. It is not just about lacking devices or Wi-Fi. It is people trying to apply for jobs on broken phones, navigating complex systems while dealing with hunger, trauma or unstable housing, and being told to “go online” in a world that was never designed for them.

At Swansea MAD, we have spent years building trust in communities where services often fall short. Our warm welcome spaces, digital inclusion sessions and creative programmes are shaped by lived experience, not theory.  Thanks to an offer of grant funding from Ufi VocTech Activate we are proud to introduce Belonging through Bytes, which has  grown directly out of that work. It takes what we know works on the ground and turns it into something scalable, without losing the human relationships that make it meaningful. This is not a traditional online course. Belonging through Bytes is an interactive, AI-enabled learning space where adults work through real-life challenges they recognise. From handling workplace communication to preparing for interviews or managing shift patterns, each activity reflects situations people are already facing. Learners can explore decisions, make mistakes safely and build confidence step by step, supported by AI that helps them think, not tells them what to do.

Crucially, this work is not being built in isolation. We are co-designing it with the people who use our services, alongside partners including Adult Learning Wales and Swansea University. Employers, community organisations and frontline practitioners are shaping the scenarios to ensure they reflect real workplaces and real barriers. This means the learning is not abstract—it is practical, relevant and rooted in lived experience.

The technology itself is deliberately simple and accessible. It works on low-spec devices, avoids complicated sign-ups and is designed for people who may have limited data or confidence online. Behind the scenes, it uses AI carefully and responsibly, with clear safeguards and structured prompts that keep learners in control. This is about building critical confidence with AI, not dependency on it.

Belonging through Bytes is also designed to grow. The platform can be adapted by other organisations, with local content, different learner groups and new challenges added over time. Our aim is to create something that works in community centres, colleges, job clubs and beyond, without losing the values it was built on.

We are often told that innovation in AI should be ethical, inclusive and grounded in real life. This is what that looks like. Not polished tech for the sake of it, but tools shaped by people who know what it means to be exclude and who are building something better anyway.

Swansea MAD has never been about fitting into systems that do not work. We build what our community actually needs. Belonging through Bytes is the next step in that journey.
