An update on Payne Street Studios

We at Swansea MAD are well underway with the development of our new music studio in Neath Port Talbot. At the start of 2021, we were funded by the Youth Music Incubator Fund, to start our exciting new creative project ‘InTune’.

The mission of the InTune project is to create accessible music opportunities for young people in Wales. Through hiring young creative interns for the project, we have been able to get fresh perspectives about what is needed in the community to support young musicians- and what better than a music studio?

The project started in early May 2021, where we were working with the interns to create a plan along with objectives for the studio space. We ordered our materials, worked with budgets, and also brainstormed around the marketing of our brand. Our interns gained qualifications and experience working in an office setting too- building on workplace skills that they may need for the future.

Throughout the project, the Intune Team have embarked on new creative activities, learning skills such as video editing and sound production, along with how to work with technical equipment. They have started a podcast where they review albums (coming soon!), along with learning vinyl DJing skills each week with Stuart from the Swansea MAD team.

The music studio is based at the old technology centre at Melin Community Trust, in Neath Port Talbot. The interns, along with some of the Swansea MAD team, Alex from the Melin Community Trust, and a great group of local volunteers have been down to the space regularly, painting and sanding. Our next step is building the foundations and blocking out the areas of the room for our new studio space.
